Twenty Years of Transformation: Celebrating the Melbourne Showgrounds Redevelopment

In 2006, one of Victoria’s most iconic venues entered a defining new chapter. After years of planning, collaboration and investment, the redeveloped Melbourne Showgrounds reopened in time for the 2006 Melbourne Royal Show (then Royal Melbourne Show), marking a moment that would reshape the future of the precinct and its place in Melbourne’s cultural life.

Twenty years on, the Melbourne Showgrounds redevelopment stands as a powerful example of how thoughtful design, heritage preservation and long term vision can transform a historic site into a modern, world class events destination. What was once a venue primarily known for a single annual event has evolved into a dynamic, year round precinct that continues to bring people together.

Twenty Years On, Still Bringing Melbourne Together

The redevelopment was delivered through a landmark public-private partnership between the Victorian Government and the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria (RASV). With more than $100,000,000 invested, the project set out to secure the future of the Melbourne Royal Show while creating a flexible, multi-use venue capable of hosting major exhibitions, concerts, conferences and community events.

Construction began in early 2005 and was completed on schedule for reopening in September 2006. Guided by a carefully considered master plan, the redevelopment balanced contemporary architecture with deep respect for the Showgrounds’ heritage, ensuring the site’s history remained visible and valued.

The transformed precinct introduced modern pavilions, upgraded arenas and landscaped public spaces that dramatically expanded the Showgrounds’ capabilities. Flexible indoor venues allowed for large scale exhibitions and agricultural showcases, while improved outdoor spaces created inviting environments for entertainment, competition and celebration. These changes enabled the Melbourne Showgrounds to operate as a vibrant destination well beyond showtime.

Equally important was the careful restoration of much loved heritage buildings. Landmarks such as Agriculture Hall and the Grandstand were preserved and enhanced, maintaining a strong connection to the past. Iconic features including Pie in the Sky continued to delight visitors, reinforcing a sense of continuity across generations.

Since reopening, the Melbourne Showgrounds has welcomed millions of visitors and hosted an extraordinary diversity of events. From the annual Melbourne Royal Show to international exhibitions, concerts, festivals and community gatherings, the precinct has become a cornerstone of Melbourne’s events and cultural calendar.

The impact of the redevelopment extends well beyond the site itself. Over the past two decades, it has supported tourism and economic growth, strengthened the visibility of Australian agriculture and created a place where urban and regional communities connect. The Melbourne Showgrounds has become a living, evolving space that reflects the city’s diversity while honouring its agricultural roots.

To mark the 20th anniversary, Melbourne Royal invites past attendees to share their favourite Melbourne Royal Show memories, celebrating moments that span generations. From childhood visits and family traditions to first shows and unforgettable performances, these stories highlight the enduring emotional connection people have with this place. Twenty years after its transformation, the Melbourne Showgrounds remains a testament to visionary planning and community spirit.
